Zagreb/London Annual Exchange Project

The Zagreb/London Exchange Project is an annual student exchange project that involves linking students from the Animation and New Media Department at the Zagreb Academy of Art in Croatia, with the 2nd year Fine Art BA students based at London Metropolitan University.

The project is of a precarious nature and, wherever possible, begins with a series of meetings, readings and workshops which aim to set out some of the objectives of the project. Implicit in the structure is the idea of ‘exchange’. Rather than thinking of ‘exchange’ as an action of reciprocating value, the project often produces a negotiation around terms such as interruption, shifters, focalisers, generosity, imposition, hospitality and responsibility – questioning and reflecting on the meaning of ‘host’ and ‘guest’ and the zones of comfort and discomfort  in between. The nature of the project means that the work has to be developed in a climate of fluidity and spontaneity where the students are continually responding to each other, to the familiar or unfamiliar, tuning and retuning in order to find a frequency of translation where dialogue is enabled.

There are two key stages of the project – students from Zagreb going to London, and students from London going to Zagreb. During their time in each of these cities the students from each university take part in a group seminars and presentations as well as organised visits to exhibitions, museums, and lectures. Students are also able and encouraged to use the Fine Art Studios and workshops at the host institution, as well as to attend lectures and seminars that take place within the course of the normal workings of the host institution.

Perhaps most importantly, the participating students are asked to make new work during their time away from home. The project also includes students giving guided tours/walks (both of their home town, and the town they visit) for their visiting peers. Directed group work may result in collaborative works where two or more students work on projects together, but this is not a requirement. The resulting work is then exhibited in a Gallery in the host city. In the case of exhibiting in Zagreb, the host Gallery has always been Miroslav Kraljevic Gallery, which is a highly respected independent non-profit gallery in the centre of the city. Miroslav Kraljevic Gallery continues to offer curatorial, technical and practical support, as well as funding the printing of a flyer to publicise the event.

One of the key intentions of the project is that students should develop an understanding of how the immediate environment, as well as cultural history and socio-political realities influence ones working practice as an artist. Tied to this is the issue of the role that specific modes of fine art education play in defining thought processes, self-image, and physical outcomes. The perceived role and responsibilities of contemporary Fine Art education, if not always explicitly, is a constant theme of the project.

Project supervisors and coordinators: Ben Cain (LMU) and Nicole Hewitt (ALU), Ana Hušman (ALU).

Studenti se pripremaju za susret vec nekoliko mjeseci unaprijed – salju jedni drugima radove, spremaju radove za svoje partnere u obliku Vodica – audio vodica, turistickog vodica, strucnog vodica. Ovo je prilika da studenti realiziraju interaktivan rad, ali I prilika da se jedna od mogucih tema razmjene (Turizam, promatranje drugoga , dislokacija.}

London – Zagreb
U drugoj fazi, studenti MUL dolaze u Zagreb.
